In the late nineteenth century, at the height of the romantic Victorian era where new frontiers still beckoned and exceptional individuals possessing vision, drive, and a pioneering spirit could change the world, a distinguished gentleman by the name of Dr Frederik Raynor and his new bride became entranced and captivated by the untouched beauty of this region on the North Island.  With its natural bushlands, clear star-studded country skies, rushing rivers, crystal-clear lakes and steaming mineral pools welling up from the depths of the earth Dr Raynor set out to find the perfect spot to call home.

In 1898 Dr Raynor discovered that perfect magical location, a north facing site, enjoying sunshine all day, all year, no matter the season; a site situated on an elevated knoll that looked out over sweeping views of the distant soft rolling hills, the many bays and the calm pristine waters of Lake Rotoiti… and so it was at this exclusive, secluded spot that Moose Lodge was born.

In a little over a century, with only 5 guardians, Moose Lodge’s legacy has been lovingly kept and preserved while each guardian has contributed their style over the years.  While instilling personal touches and adding modern improvements, all renovations have always stayed true to the heritage and core aesthetics of the property.  Each one has been mindful of  the essence, spirit and style of the Estate and has ensured the soul of this magnificent property is central and protected.
